Why should my child learn a second language?
There are many reasons why every parent should make it a priority to raise a bilingual child. From the emotional benefits of being able to communicate with extended family and new friends to the future career options, bilingual people certainly have more doors open to them. Let’s explore these in more detail.
Family and friends
Family, from cousins to grandparents to great aunts will often speak the heritage language. Being able to communicate is key to developing a strong bond with family. The children won’t feel marginalised when they attend family gatherings and they will be able to access support. Even if you have already moved abroad, it’s vital that you keep the heritage language in operation for your child. It’s a sad case of affairs when parents cannot speak the language of the community and the child cannot speak the heritage language.
When the parents can speak the same language as that in the community and the child can speak the heritage language, parents can take a far more active role in the lives of the children as they grow.
It’s so much easier to travel when you can speak more than just the one language. It’s also a way to have an open mind on the way to look at things, have greater creativity and improved problem solving – which all also happen to be valuable skills that are used in our daily lives. Being able to speak a second language can open doors when it comes to job and career opportunities.
There are so many new jobs that have been introduced because of globalisation. Those who are bi-lingual or even multi-lingual are now very much in demand to fill positions and this is an area that will continue to grow. Learning another language early in life sets the foundation to learn others later. If you’d like to give this opportunity to your child, start him off the right way with learning another language.
Research has also found that those who can speak more languages score better on problem-solving and creative thinking tests. Knowing more than one language also opens the door to cultural experiences and heritage that may not be available otherwise. It also gives a window into literature written in the original language, professional information and online resources. Bilingual children have also been found to have better reading skills at an earlier age. They see how they can use language as a tool to suit their environment.
They also have control over which language to use and when and this enables them to see that their skills can influence their destiny. Even as an infant, they begin learning how to puzzle ideas together in addition to learning about their physical surroundings. They can focus on this as a mental task, and it’s this reasoning that can give them the educational advantage when they start school. Cultural Benefit Being accepting and understanding of cultural differences is what makes the world a far more peaceful place.
However, it’s only through being able to understand the language of any country, that the culture of it becomes available. Bilingual children have a deeper interest in cultural differences than monolinguals as they are trained to have an interest in it. This can make them more tolerant at a younger age.
As you can see there are many advantages to a child being able to speak a second language. We recommend that every child learns how to speak at least one other language as that is what will enable them to interact with more citizens of the world and gain better career opportunities.
