OUR CHILDCARE PROFESSIONALS
Rota nanny
Your children deserve the best
WHY HIRE A rota nanny?
Great British Nannies offer over 10 years of experience in placing nannies with families in the UK and overseas, including rota nannies for households that need consistent, round-the-clock childcare.
A rota nanny works on a rotational schedule, sharing the role with a second nanny so your children always have a dedicated, familiar carer on duty. Common rotas include two weeks on and two weeks off, or one week on and one week off, although every rota is agreed around your family’s routine, travel and homes.
Rota nannies are ideal for busy and high-profile families, parents who travel frequently, families with more than one home, and households that need 24-hour or extended-hours cover. Because each nanny has full time off between rotations, they return rested and focused, which supports consistent, high-quality care.
The rota nannies we register are experienced, qualified and have excellent contactable references, a valid enhanced DBS certificate along with an in-date first aid certificate, so that you know your child will be in the best care. We place rota nannies in London, across the UK and internationally.
Great British Nannies take the time to understand your family’s unique requirements, then source and match rota nannies who work well together, share your approach to childcare and provide smooth handovers between rotations.

What is a rota nanny?
A rota nanny is a professional nanny who works in rotation with another nanny, so that between them they provide continuous childcare for your family. While on duty, a rota nanny usually lives in with the family (or travels with you) and works longer days than a standard live-in nanny, before handing over to their rota partner for their time off.
Rota nanny roles are popular with families who need cover 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, families who split their time between several homes or countries, and parents with demanding schedules who want the reassurance of the same two trusted carers. Depending on your family’s needs, one of the team at Great British Nannies will advise you on the rota pattern and set-up that will work best.
When you hire a rota nanny, you can expect them to carry out all nursery duties which relate to the daily well-being of your children, including:
- Following the routine you have in place for your children, and keeping it consistent between rota partners through detailed handovers.
- Assisting with feeding, including knowledge of weaning, and creating healthy and simple meals for your child.
- Dressing, bathing, and ensuring your child is clean and always has good hygiene.
- Keeping the nursery and child’s room clean, tidy and organised, along with your child’s laundry.
- Planning fun, engaging and age-appropriate activities inside and outside of the home, including day trips and play dates.
- Travelling with the family between homes or on holiday, where this is part of the role.
- Overnight care where agreed, as part of 24-hour cover.
As an Employer you must provide the following to your rota nanny;
- A valid Contract of Employment, including the agreed rota pattern.
- Paid holiday entitlement in line with UK employment law.
- Employer liability insurance.
- Private accommodation while on duty, with adequate privacy and preferably a private bathroom.
- Agreed wages along with any overtime owed, including payment of the nanny’s tax and national insurance contributions.
- Meals while on duty, discussing any dietary requirements and allergies prior to arrival.
- Travel expenses between rotations, and visas and flights if the role is overseas or involves travel with the family.
